Crystal Bay Club

If you're looking to "get lucky at the lake," we may have just the place for you.

Located at State Route 28 in Crystal Bay, the Crystal Bay Club is smaller and less storied than its neighbor, the Cal Neva Lodge, and so it has to be a lean, mean operation that concentrates even more on customer service.

This is kind of a "ma and pa" shop, with owners Roger and Elise Norman very visible on the casino website.

The casino was in the process of being built when the nearby Cal Neva Lodge was being burned to the ground and rebuilt. When it opened in 1937, it was the Ta-Neva-Ho, and within the block was not only gaming, but other business as well, including a bank, drug store and bakery. There was limited gaming there until after the war, but under the stewardship of John Rayburn, it really came of age, announcing a gala grand opening in 1946 that included, among other things, 37 new slot machines.

Crystal Bay Club In 1956 the Ta-Neva-Ho was completely renovated and re-opened, this time under the name Crystal Bay Club. The property changed hands a number of times over the years and also went through a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. In 2003 there was another opening, this time under the auspices of the Normans, who undertook one of the more ambitious renovations ever in the Lake, creating a warm environment with earth tones, at the same time jumping into the Space Age electronically.

In the casino itself, the Crystal Bay Club offers single deck blackjack, double odds craps, roulette and Three Card Poker, along with a large array of slot machines. There are 233 gaming machines, including slots and video poker. The casino is around 13,000 square feet. There are not a lot of tables to choose from - just tenh for blackjack, and one each for craps and roulette. Obviously, the casino is in Nevada, so there is a race and sports book as well, which hosts "tailgate parties" during football season.

There is a poker room, but it is fair to say that it isn't considered a major component of the operation. It is open only five days a week (Wednesday through Sunday) and only from 7 PM forward. It is a non-smoking atmosphere.

In the Crown Room and the Red Room, there is entertainment to be had year-round. There are two restaurants on the premises. The Crystal Bay Club takes a special degree of pride in its Steak and Lobster House, its headquarters for fine dining, where entrees are customarily prepared at table-side. They also boast "the North Shore's most extensive wine list." Its reputation is such that it is a preferred stop for locals as well as tourists, even those who may be staying at other locations.

Meetings and conferences can be accommodated, but you may have to stay somewhere else, because there are only nine standard rooms available at the Crystal Bay Club Hotel. Nonetheless, the owners have succeeded in building an atmosphere of warmth and welcome that makes it a mainstay of the North Shore.
