Cal Neva Lodge and Casino
Geographically speaking, the Cal Neva Lodge, which bills itself as the "Lady of the Lake," is exactly what the name implies, as it straddles a border - that between California and Nevada. It is officially located in Crystal Bay, Nevada.
Originally built in 1926, there is something of a mystique that surrounds this casino resort, which has a rich history of being a haunt for the rich and famous, along with the rather infamous. Some of the most powerful and influential people in the worlds of politics and entertainment have made it their second home. It is said that the Cal Neva hosted games of chance even before they became legal in the state of Nevada in 1931. A fire burned the original structure to the ground back in 1937, but it was almost miraculously rebuilt within a 30-day period, with over 500 people working around the clock.
By Tahoe standards, the rooms are reasonably priced, and generally can be had for less than $200 a night. Eighteen suites, priced on a more upscale basis, are available as well. They have a full balcony where you can get out and walk around. All of the rooms have a view of Lake Tahoe, and the Cal Neva boasts that its Tower Rooms gives the best views of the lake of any property in the area. There are 199 rooms in all.
The casino is not huge (15,000 square feet) and does not have craps tables,
but it is intimate, and there is a warmth that is projected by this property
from the moment you drive up to it. The Lakeview Dining Room promotes that
same atmosphere, and as the resort's only real dining facility, it has to
be elegant while at the same time shed itself of pretentiousness.
You'll find a European Spa, internet cafe and ample facilities for weddings on the premises. In fact, there is a full staff of wedding professionals on hand, because those ceremonies are in great demand. And there are some spectacular setting indeed! Five of them are lakeside, and they include the Gazebo, a location that can seat up to 200 guests, the State Room, an indoor setting that offers a majestic view of the lake, and the Lake View Chapel, which gives a jaw-dropping 180-degree view of Lake Tahoe.
Then there is the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Showroom, which is just that - a real casino showroom, with perfect acoustics, that has been the scene of many a celebrity wedding. Or did we mention that Sinatra himself was once a shareholder in the resort?
The Cal Neva offers special packages to its customers based on the season. For example, in the spring and summer, golf packages are readily available, while when winter time comes along, something usually pretty attractive is put together that highlights the very large concentration of ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area. In that one, you get a room and a full-day ticket for the slopes, along with other extras.
Meetings and conventions of all different sizes are held at the Cal Neva, and because it is privately-owned and not part of any large corporate structure, they take pride in being able to offer a level of service that is personal and expedient. They've got over 16,000 square feet of meeting space available.
